Niger leader rewrites rules to keep power
Posted by admin / Under Guinea Pig Hutch
The cause of democracy in Africa could have done without this latest affront. Barely six months after giving the French president an undertaking that he would leave power at the end of his second term, Nigers president, Mamadou Tandja, has rewritten the rules to give himself power for as long as he wishes. A general election was held on 20 October to renew 113 seats in parliament, which Tandja dissolved in May to overcome its opposition to his plans to change the constitution. He organised a referendum on 4 August to obtain popular approval for new rules, doing away with...

Niger president seeks to extend rule
Posted by admin / Under Guinea Pig Hutch
Niger voted on Tuesday in a referendum the president hopes will give him a mandate to change the constitution and rule beyond the end of his term. Mamadou Tandjas growing authoritarianism has raised fears of unrest in Africas second biggest uranium producer. The European Union on Tuesday warned that Mr Tandjas actions could lead it to cut aid. In recent months, the president has governed by decree after dissolving parliament and disregarding the Supreme Courts ruling against his plans to extend his stay in office beyond a two-term limit. In voting today [Tuesday], I believe I have responded to the...

Medical assault on the three-foot Guinea worm of Sudan
Posted by admin / Under Guinea Pig Hutch
It was an agonising process that lasted days as the worms, measuring around one metre (three feet) in length, fought their way out of her body. "They were very painful, you cannot rest or sleep," the young mother said, her baby resting on her back in a goatskin carrying pouch. ......................................................... The Carter Centre - the not-for-profit organisation founded by former US president Jimmy Carter - has been working in Sudan since 1989 to exterminate the worm once and for all. He said that when they started their project in southern Sudan they found more than 100,000 cases of infection....

Coups and the clowns they propel to power
Posted by admin / Under Guinea Pig Hutch
The problem with African coup detats is not just the fact that they flout constitutionalism they also have an unfortunate tendency to propel virtual clowns to power whose only distinction is force of arms. Moussa Dadis Camara in Guinea is a perfect example. A small-time army captain whom nobody had heard of before, stormed to power in December last year promising a clean sweep. The regime of Lansana Conte, who had just died, had presided since 1984 over a basketcase of a country, dirt-poor despite having perhaps the leading deposits of bauxite in the world, plus a fair amount...
